The "hidden homeless"

-

The news that house prices are increasing seems like great newsfor homeowners, but there is a downside to the property boom. Homeowners may feel that they are sitting on agoldmine, but if they want to move then they have to pay similar prices foranother home.

Greens feel that the real losers in the property boom are families - manyyoung people are forced to put off having families or live in the parentalhome due to the cost of housing. We are experiencing a generation of "hiddenhomeless" - young people who move from sofa to sofa because they can'tafford to buy. Parents who wish to save for retirement often feel that theyhave to remortgage their homes to give their children the same chances thatthey had.
