Proposed new Birmingham-Manchester toll motorway

-

Conference notes today's report published by Transport 2000 regarding the proposed new toll motorway between Birmingham and Manchester in parallel with the M6.

We note that for every person supporting the proposed new road, eighteen are opposing it. Conference welcomes the publication of this report and congratulates Transport 2000.

Conference also notes the long-established fact that roadbuilding generates additional traffic, and that road transport directly contributes at least 20% of greenhouse gas emissions. In light of mounting concern about climate change we consider all such roadbuilding highly irresponsible.

We therefore call on the government and other pro-roadbuilding parties to acknowledge that current transport policy is entirely opposed to the effort to cut CO2 emissions; that major traffic reduction is essential; and that instead of spending £30 billion in 10 years building more roads, the government should be funding greener transport modes including massive improvements in public transport.

Conference instructs the Green Party Executive to publicise the party's views on this issue.
