Jayne Forbes
Jayne Forbes has been a member of the Green party for over 20 years and believes that now, more than ever, its policies are vital for our long-term sustainability.
She is Chair of the World Development Movement, an organisation campaigning to relieve poverty in developing countries, she has worked tirelessly to promote the agenda of 'justice for the world's poor'. She has also been Chair of Tourism Concern, working to secure sustainable tourism development. She plays tennis and with what little time is left takes an active interest in international affairs, which has earned her the role of Green Party Spokesperson for Globalisation and International Development.
Her first experience as a candidate for the Green Party was in 1990 in the local elections and since then has been a candidate in many elections at the local, national and European level. Last time Jayne stood as the candidate for Parliament for Hornsey and Wood Green she achieved over 5% of the vote and she is hoping to achieve higher this time to demonstrate to politicians the importance of issues of social justice and the environment.
As a candidate in London, Jayne feels very strongly that the bid for the Olympic Games is unacceptable. It will cost each Londoner hundreds of pounds to pay for it. It will create large mega structures which will become redundant, meanwhile many local sports facilities are closing down and support for future sports people is being reduced. It will create few sustainable local jobs and is environmentally unsound. She would like to see the money that has been committed for regeneration and an improved transport system, actually used for the job, and that development should take place which will provide for the needs of local people.
Jayne is very committed to working to help those people who, due to the present system, are unable to help themselves, she has a strong motivation of justice for all and protection of the environment and would very much like to have the opportunity to promote that agenda at the national level.
