Policing of protests: HMIC review a step forward
14 April 2009
But not far enough, says Jenny Jones
As the row over Britain's increasingly aggressive policing of peaceful protests grows, the Green Party's Jenny Jones - member of the London Assembly and the Metropolitan Police Authority - commented:
"The announcement of a review by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary is a step forward, but on its own it doesn't go far enough.
"HMIC's review will only be satisfactory if it does two things:
"It must take evidence in a public forum from all concerned, including protesters.
"And it must closely examine other recent protests and the growing concern that police tactics have become more aggressive in recent years."
Ms Jones, who is the Green Party's home affairs spokesperson, concluded:
"Unless the review does these two things at least a full public enquiry will be needed."
