Green party

Where next for British politics?

07 June 2009

It is important that the government and local councils respond to the concerns of Green voters. The real threat of dangerous climate change and the economy's problems require investment in energy conservation and insulation programmes, renewable energy production, better public transport and public services, local smaller-scale agriculture, green businesses and ways of supporting local products and services.

I was saddened to see so many votes for extremists. The major problems facing us all - man-made climate change, rising unemployment and social divisions - will not be solved by nationalism, isolationism, flag waving or the creation of hate and fear. To create a sustainable society we must create greater social cohesion not less and develop greater international cooperation not xenophobia, wasteful competition and conflict.

The good news is that Green politics is growing across Europe and this is giving hope to many young people who are campaigning for the future.
