Green Party activist to 'blog' conference for New Statesman's website

19 September 2006

Green Party activist and 4x4 campaigner, Sian Berry, is to 'blog' her experiences at the Green Party's Hove conference (opening tomorrow) for the New Statesman's website.

A member of the Green Party since the 2001 general election, Sian joined the National Executive as Campaigns Co-ordinator in 2005, stood as Green candidate for the Hampstead and Highgate constituency in the last general election of 2005, and narrowly missed being elected to Camden Council in both the 2002 and 2006 local elections.

As national Campaigns Co-ordinator she has spearheaded initiatives such as the greenenergyworks.org.uk website, detailing the rationale and need for a non-nuclear future, and regularly represents the Green party externally.

This conference will see her contest the post of female Principal Speaker, aiming to succeed Caroline Lucas MEP who has held the position for the past 3 years.

Sian commented: "This is a really exciting time for the Green Party. There is a real sense of momentum at the moment, and we welcome the rise of the Green agenda. In recent general and local elections, we have had enormous success with record numbers of Green Councillors now taking real action on the ground in support of the environment and social justice. I hope to help build on that in the next couple of years and help us to achieve even greater success.

"People recognise that there is only one authentic and original Green voice, and it's flattering for us that the other parties are now attempting to echo us - in their words at least, but not in their deeds. Make no mistake, they are a pale imitation - consistently letting down the voters when tough decisions need to be made.

"It is only the Green Party who have both the policies and the political will to bring about the sea change that UK politics needs if we are to really tackle climate change and create a fairer society at the same time. We are changing the political climate."

Sian's blog is available on the New Statesman's website and will be updated throughout the conference, which runs from Thursday 21st to Sunday 24th September
