Green Party support calls for heroin on prescription
20 February 2007
The Green Party came out heavily in support of police calls from Alan Jones president of ACPO for heroin to be offered on prescription for long term heroin users.
Shane Collins Green Party Drugs spokesperson said:
"Heroin prescription has been green policy for many years now, we estimate it would cut the crime rate by just over 50% in the UK, by removing addicts need to steal to feed their heroin habit.
"|It is worth noting that the Downing Street Strategy Unit (1) concluded that 80% of burglaries, 54% of robberies and 57% of all crime in the UK was down to people feeding a class A drug habit. The government hushed up the report which was leaked to the press in 2005.
"High crime rate produces distrust and breakdown in community life, We need strong communities for the challenges of climate change and peak oil ahead and prescribing heroin will play a large part in cutting crime and rebuilding communities.
"Heroin on prescription will undercut heroin dealers, thus producing less new addicts, less thieves, less prostitutes and less prison overcrowding. For us and the police it is a win win situationunfortunately the government is addicted to it's self defeating war on drugs."
