15 February 2006
Greens are to thank bus passengers forhelping to make London a cleaner, healthier and friendlier place to live -giving out thank-you presents of locally grown organic apples for people toenjoy during their journeys
London Assembly Members Jenny Jones and Darren Johnson will be joined byother Greens to thank commuters for using public transport and mark thestart of a Europe-wide climate campaign by the European Green Party, "Stopclimate change: Play your part". This is being launched today in Strasbourgby 42 Green members of the European Parliament, including the UK's two GreenMEPs, Jean Lambert and Caroline Lucas.
Jenny Jones AM - recently appointed the Mayor's Green Transport Advisor -says of today's event: "Environmental campaigners sometimes use too manysticks and not enough carrots when talking to the public about climatechange. In London, millions are already playing their part by using publictransport. Thanks to improved services and people's concerns about thehealth of our city, bus ridership is up 32 per cent since 2001, and theGreen Party has decided to mark the start of our Europe-wide campaign bythanking those who have contributed to this success. Today we are giving outsome carrots for a change, in the form of delicious, locally grown, organicapples."
Darren Johnson AM comments: "The Energy Review currently underway is aboutmeeting Tony Blair's desire for more nuclear power stations - and ignoresthe fact that the fastest growing user of energy is transport. Nuclear powerwould reduce UK carbon dioxide emissions by a tiny amount, but the realtough decisions are being made every day by ordinary people choosing to takethe bus instead of the car, and we are here to say 'thank you' to them."
