Mayor should support Parliament Square peace camp
16 August 2007
Responding to reports that the Mayor of London has decided to evict all except Brian Haw from the Parliament Square peace camp, Jenny Jones, Green Party Member of the London Assembly has called on the Mayor to support the camp, rather than attack it.
"Brian Haw and the people attending his peace camp are doing an important public service by reminding all of us, including those in Parliament, that the war in Iraq is a terrible mistake. We should be thanking these people rather than attacking them."
"I have been to the camp on many occasions and have never seen any evidence of uncleanliness. If the Mayor is convinced that there is a cause for concern regarding the hygiene of the area, he should make sure that protestors have good access to public toilets. I call on the Mayor to reverse his decision immediately."
