Green mayoral candidate appeals to black Londoners

07 June 2004

Darren Johnson, the Green Party's mayoral candidate will be addressing over 400 people from London's black and ethnic minority communities, tonight, in the last mayoral hustings before the election.

Mr Johnson, commented today: "London is a richly diverse city with large ethnic minority communities that must engage in the political process if we are going to have a healthy democracy in this city. I am looking forward to this evening's hustings as an opportunity to listen to minority concerns as well as a chance to show off the Green Party's impressive track record on fighting for greater equality in the capital.

He continued "Traditionally there has been a lack of involvement and poor turnouts from minority groups, but things are changing for the better as parties like the Greens are successful in spreading the message to communities who we have previously failed to reach."

Operation Black Vote, Black Londoners Forum, National Assembly Against Racism, 1990 Trust, 100 Black Men, Black Britain.com and Westminster Racial Equality Council and others will be present this evening to listen to all the candidates and press for a greater say in the governance of the capital.
