Queens Speech was a missed opportunity

18 November 2009

Caroline Lucas, responding to the Queen's Speech earlier today, said:

"We welcome the bill to finally ratify the international ban on cluster munitions."

"Bercow wore a cloak not stockings, but real modernisation would mean PR voting and more women and minorities in Parliament."

"However, the proposed bills on banking and fiscal responsibility do not go anywhere near far enough. We need a root-and-branch transformation of the banking sector, and we must move away from the failed system of huge private banks gambling on the global casino."

"Instead of the government's proposed energy bill, we would favour a nationwide programme that puts energy efficiency and warm homes at its centre. This would tackle the climate crisis, as well as creating jobs across the country. In Kirklees, Green councillors have led the introduction of a free mass insulation scheme for every household in the district. Currently, government insulation schemes are grant-based and often don't reach the people who need them the most. Warmer homes also have numerous mental and physical health benefits. Only Greens have the political determination to push a radical idea like this to the top of the political agenda."
