Euro-MP calls for a micro-turbine on every roof
11 November 2005
New buildings in the South-East should have micro-generation solar panels orwind turbines installed during construction to reduce electricity demand andgreenhouse gas emissions, Euro-MP Caroline Lucas told a conference onrenewable energy today (Friday, November 11th).
Speaking at the South East Renewable Energy Conference in Tonbridge, Kent, the South East England MEP will say the region can only develop sustainablyif we make radical changes to the way we produce and consume energy.
"Alongside energy conservation and improved efficiency, renewable energygeneration is absolutely central to reducing greenhouse gas emissions - asrequired of any sustainable development," she will say.
"The Government must adopt and promote tough binding targets for emissionsreduction, and it must place sustainability at the core of economic policy -but it must also use planning guidelines and other measures to ensure allnew buildings are constructed in a way which minimises their future energyneeds and emissions."
The annual two-day conference - which began yesterday - brings togetherpolicy-makers, NGOs, scientists and industry for a series of workshops, debates and talks on renewable energy in the region. Dr Lucas spoke on thesubject of 'Sustainable development in the South East'.
Notes to Editors: The Green Party has called for UK greenhouse gas emissionsof 80-90 per cent, under the [principle of 'Contraction and Convergence' -in which developed nations are required to cut emissions much faster thanpoorer countries. See www.gci.org.uk for more information.
