Spring Conference Opens

16th Mar 2006

"Greens are the only party to offer viable and sustainable policies"

The Green Party Spring Conference was today opened by Chair of the Young Greens Dylan Banks.

"We are here today in part in preparation for the forthcoming local elections, where Greens hope to have substantial success," he said.

"Everyday issues that the Green party have a unique stance on - our unswerving opposition to nuclear power, both civil and military, and policy of 'contraction and convergence' as the only means of seriously combating climate change to name but two - are rising up the political agenda. The Green Party are the only party to offer viable and sustainable policies as a means of tackling these - and the many other fundamental problems - the UK and the world face today."

Conference runs through until Sunday 19th March. Friday is the main media day, highlights include:

- Principal Speaker Caroline Lucas's keynote speech at 10AM

- Emergency Motion voting on issues such as recent events in Jericho, the ongoing situation in Iraq and escalating situation with Iran at 10.20AM

- Health Panel debate considering the future of the NHS with Professor Colin Leys and Jean Lambert MEP.

-Voting on a radical policy to regulate aviation industry advertising. With rising awareness of the implications of air travel, this proposes legislative controls on flight advertising including mandatory health warnings and information about flights CO2 emissions.

(Proposed by, amongst others, Sian Berry - a member of the Green Party National Executive and founding member of the Alliance Against Urban 4x4 - A visual will accompany this: an example advert under the proposals

- Panel Debate on Nuclear power: "Remembering Chernobyl, Twenty Year on - Lessons from catastrophe" Jean Lambert MEP, Caroline Lucas MEP and Darren Johnson AM will be joined by speakers from CND and Friends of the Earth to discuss the threat posed by possible further investment in nuclear power in the UK, looking towards a Green energy future.
