Government should instigate key Security Council resolutions
The Green Party conference has voted to lobby the government to instigate key Security Council resolutions and to send a public message of support to anti-war protestors taking part in a series of demonstrations across the world tomorrow.
Proposing an emergency motion, Joseph Healy, of London Green Party, said allied forces in any Middle East country, and Israeli forces in Palestine, must be withdrawn over a period of months, to be replaced by United Nations forces. He also called for UN member states to cease threatening illegal military action against Iran, and for greater efforts, by the international community, to respect and negotiate with the Iranian government.
"In view of the failure of British and American forces to halt the escalating crisis in Iraq," he said, "and in view of the very recent events in Jericho, where British monitors clearly failed to prevent violence and abduction, Conference calls upon the Executive to lobby the British Government."
Of tomorrow's demonstrations he said: "We agree with the aims of the Stop the War coalition, CND, and the Muslim Association of Britain on this issue and send our full support."
