Greens propose radical economic reforms at Climate Camp

Molly Scott Cato, the Green Party's economics spokesperson, will be speaking on an economics panel today (Friday 28th August) at the Camp for Climate Action.

In advance of her talk, Cato said: "The climate campers are asking the right question; can we stop climate change within a capitalist economy? Capitalism is never going to meet the needs of the world's people, nor be compatible with a sustainable future."

She continued: "I'm going to explain to them why I think that is the case, as well as outlining how a green economy might look. I'll suggest to climate campers they go home and set up local currencies, shift their purchasing away from the corporate sector to co-operatives, and work together to build a convivial economy."

The Green Party recognises that the push for growth at all costs has led to our massive environmental crisis and deep social inequalities.

Our party's plan, the Green New Deal, plans to rebuild the economy (a £45 billion investment to create 1 million jobs), so that it delivers for people, but also operates within environmental limits.

The Green New Deal will:

• Regulate banking and close tax loopholes
• Provide free insulation for homes, schools and hospitals
• Create more affordable housing for rent
• Invest massively in renewable energy and energy efficiency
• Invest in public transport and in waste management
• Introduce green workforce training
• Provide decent pensions and free social care for older people
• Reduce poverty massively by introducing a Citizen's income
