LOCAL ELECTIONS 2007: FINAL RESULTS

Green Party Principal Speaker Dr. Derek Wall said: "Yesterday, the Green Party had 93 Cllrs. Today we have 110 - an increase of almost 20 per cent. This is a breakthrough election for us, taking us into triple figures.

"We saw significant gains in some of our key areas - including Brighton, Norwich and Lancaster.

"In Norwich South, one of our target constituencies, we have become the highest scoring party in these elections - topping the popular vote with 29 per cent of the vote. This places us in pole position to fight for the Wesminster seat - as the main challengers to Charles Clarke. We lost out on becoming the second largest party on the council by just one vote.

"The pace of growth is quickening as we establish our reputation in towns and cities across the country."

Below are details of some of our key areas,

  • Brighton & Hove City Council had 6 city councillors, retained 6 seats, gained 2 in Regency, 1 in Hanover & Elm Grove, 3 in Queens Park: GAIN 6 = 12 in total
(gains respectively: Sven Rufus & Hermione Roye, Vicky Wakefield Jarrett, Rachel Fryer & Ben Duncan & Paul Steedman)

= No overall control, Conservatives 26, Labour 13, Green 12 (third party), Lib Dem 2, Independent 1

  • Norwich had nine Green City Councillors and two Green County Councillors, becomes 10 City Cllrs, total of 12 Cllrs: GAIN 1 = 12 in total
Cllr Adrian Ramsay, Green group co-ordinator, said the night had been like a "roller coaster ride" for the party,(gain: Stephen Little, Town Close Ward)

  • Lancaster city council had 7 Green City Cllrs (one County not fighting this election), retained 7, gained 2 in Bulk ward, 2 in University, 1 in John O' Gaunt, GAIN 5 = 13 in total
  • First-ever Greens elected to Leicester Council
In Castle Ward, the Green Party's Matt Follett and Phil Gordon topped the poll, ousting one Labour and one Lib Dem Cllr. Cllr Gordon said: "What has pleased me most is that we've been able to bring a smile back into politics. There is far too much cynicism. The people in Castle believed we could make a difference, and it is now up to us to satisfy the expectations we have raised."
