Green Party critical of BBC support of Microsoft monopoly
12 August 2007
In wake of the BBC releasing its iPlayer as a windows-only feature, Green Party Principal Speaker Dr Derek Wall is joining protesters from Defective by Design on Tuesday to demand a more open platform. (1)
Dr Wall said:
"For years, anyone with a TV and video could record BBC programmes and keep them as long as they want. Now, with this new service, you have to buy and own a specific brand of computer system - Microsoft - and you can only keep your download for a week.
"How does that help schools and home users to move away from the Microsoft monopoly? It doesn't. It gives them another reason to keep buying the over-priced and insecure Windows operating system.
"That's the way to guarantee we all get ripped off by this software giant for years to come. It's not the job of public corporations to do Microsoft's dodgy marketing for them. They should change their approach immediately."

The demo takes place at 10.30am at BBC Television Centre in London.
