Greens call for immediate action against NHS privatisation

15 February 2008

The Green Party today passed an emergency motion roundly condemning the 'disgraceful' corporatisation of the NHS, citing the recent health contracts won by American health firm United Health Europe. The motion calls on the Government to engage in proper consultation with main stakeholders in the NHS: British citizens.

The motion further calls on local, regional and national Greens to vigorously oppose the measures that 'paves the way to monopolise malpractice and profiteering' by multinational companies.

Green Party Principal Speaker Dr. Wall today added his full support to the motion, saying

"Gordon Brown is importing the US system of health care. As Michael Moore's film 'Sicko' shows, this is the most expensive, least efficient and most unfair system of health care on the planet. Our GPs are in danger of being replaced by US corporations.

"Outsourcing healthcare to the private sector is taken from the Conservative handbook of public sector privatisation. The use of the private sector in health care provision is immoral, unethical and inequitable and should be stopped immediately. Having United Health Europe, a multinational healthcare firm from the US is further evidence of the government's love affair with the corporate sector and the destruction and sale of the NHS.

"Taxpayer's money should be used for patient care - the government are using it to line corporate pockets."
