He has been active in the Green party since 1985.
He served as a Green Councillor in Dorset and in Birmingham he stood for local, national and European elections for the Green Party.
His professional background has been in Town Planning, Land Registry and Horticulture.
Greens Win Castle Ward
Barney came to Leicester just as they won their first election in Castle Ward. He quickly got involved, taking over as chair of the Local Party. He has spoken for the Green Party on television, radio and at public meetings.
• He has campaigned against the closing of bus routes.
• He took a lead in the local campaign to stop shops in Queens Road giving away free plastic bags.
Experienced Green Candidate
Barney Smith has become an experienced Green Party speaker during two general and one European election. He has shared platforms with Labour MPs Lynne Jones and Claire Short, winning over the audiences each time.
