James Abbott

James Abbott joined the Green Party in 1988. He is Leader of the Greens on Braintree District Council where he has been a councillor since 1999. James abbott

He is Co-ordinator of Essex Greens, who are fighting:
• Tory plans for an incinerator in Essex

• Labour proposals for a second runway at Stansted Airport.

James is the Green Party's national Spokesperson on Climate Change and also Space Issues. James is a science graduate from University College London, and writes and lectures on Green issues and astronomy.
James is married with three children. He owns a small business in gardening and runs an organic tree nursery.

Leading the way on Green issues in Mid-Essex

James helped set up Witham and Braintree Green Party in 1989. Greens have held seats locally most years since 1991. Members currently hold two District, three Town and three Parish seats. In 2007, James and fellow District Councillor Phil Hughes were elected for the third time, with a vote share approaching 80%.

Key campaigns include:

• supporting recycling/opposing incineration

• supporting a new community hospital

• better public transport

• lower speed limits

• sustainable buildings.

Sustainable Energy Policy 

As a committee Chair on Braintree District Council, James helped deliver a Sustainable Energy Strategy for the Council. He strongly believes that energy policy is vital in the battle against climate change. The UK must make massive investment in renewables, reduce energy use and become much more efficient.

James AbbottJames works with colleagues in the Green and Astronomy communities nationally to help reduce energy wastage from light pollution in the UK. This pollution is caused by badly designed and poorly controlled lighting. It damages the environment, harms wildlife and is a significant waste of public money.
