Lesley Hedges
Lesley Hedges, 59, actively campaigns for environmental and social justice.
She has lived in Yorkshire since 1972. She has worked in the public, voluntary and private sectors, mostly for the NHS. She has been a nurse, mental health counsellor and public health specialist. She now works for a voluntary organisation in Bradford. She is an active member of several community and human rights groups. She is co-chair of Kirklees LGBT network and co-spokesperson for the Green Party on LGBT issues.
Lesley lives in Huddersfield. She has worked in Hull, York, Barnsley and Halifax.
Keep Local Services
Lesley has campaigned to keep services local and in public ownership. She is fighting to keep post offices open, transport cheap and accessible. She has campaigned to protect local shops from being forced to close by big supermarkets. If money is spent in local shops, the money stays in the community. Local shops have a smaller carbon footprint because they do not transport goods to huge distribution centres and then around the country.
Kirklees Councillors have influenced the council to offer free insulation to all households. This will reduce carbon emissions, keep people warm and save money.
Working for Environmental and Social Justice
Lesley is actively working to encourage more women into politics. She wants them to stand for public office and for influential positions within the Green Party.
She is active in the Green Party's Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender Group. She has worked with them to challenge homophobia. Campaigns have included stopping the deportation of lesbians and gay men who seek asylum in the UK.
