Shan Oakes

Shan Oakes, 55, works full time for justice - justice for people and for planet. She is director of an educational trust working locally and nationally. Shan Oakes

Shan has previously been:

  • an English teacher in secondary schools in Hull and East Riding
  • a senior officer in local government, working in education and community safety, promoting equality and inclusion
  • working with voluntary groups and aid agencies in Uganda.

Shan runs an eco-friendly holiday house in York to finance her campaigns. She has lived in Beverley and York since 1975. She is married, has two sons living in the region, and, recently, grandchildren.

Greens Support Communities 

Shan wants to help build healthy and happy communities. She campaigns for:

  • more local food and allotments
  • less pesticide use and no GM crops
  • integrated, affordable, public transport
  • local power generation with less reliance on oil
  • more public say in local planning and decision making
  • local and ethical business, putting people before profit
  • human rights, against injustice and oppression.

Shan came second in the Haltemprice and Howden by-election in July 2008 after a dynamic campaign.

Greens Work For Justice

Shan's message in the Haltemprice & Howden by-election was that you can't have civil liberties if you

  • support corporate power
  • start wars for oil
  • retain Trident and other nuclear weapons
  • vote for capital punishment
  • oppose laws which protect gay children from being bullied in school.

Shan is on the national board of DEA. The charity promotes education for a just and sustainable world. She has a Master's degree in Education for Sustainability.
