Phelim Mac Cafferty is the joint international co-ordinator for The Green Party:
The Green Party of England and Wales urgently calls on Rwandan President Paul Kagame to remove obstacles to the creation of the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda. Further, we call on Rwandan President Paul Kagame to ensure the security of all those supporting this initiative.
"The formal registration of the party, which is done through the collection of signatures in Rwanda has been frustrated by alleged government intervention. Apparently, 4 legally organised meetings of the DGPR have been sabotaged by the Rwandan government. As such the situation is very worrying for all democratic parties in Rwanda and particularly for our fledgling sister party."
"As Rwanda is hoping to join the Commonwealth, we also call on David Miliband, the Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary to register protest at the refusal of President Kagame to recognise the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda."
"Despite international observers bearing witness to the obstruction from the Rwandan government and several reports on BBC radio we unfortunately still have obstruction. We hope that by adding our voices we can help surmount the obstacles put in place by the Kagame government."
