GREEN PARTY CLARIFICATION REGARDING SHAHRAR ALI AND ALLEGATIONS OF ANTISEMITISM DURING 2018 LEADERSHIP ELECTIONS
Following discussions with Shahrar Ali, who was a candidate in the internal elections for Leader that took place in the summer of 2018, we wish to make the following clarification:
On 3 Aug 2018, the Party received enquiries from Left Foot Forward about a speech Dr Ali had made on behalf of the Party in Jan 2009 protesting the killing of Gaza civilians during Operation Cast Lead. In response, the Party issued a quote in response which acknowledged that “This [the 2009 speech] was previously raised with us informally. We recognise that our processes in dealing with these concerns at the time were inadequate.”
This reference to the Party’s actions in 2009 were used by other publications to make false statements about Dr Ali. The Party press office was not responsible for those statements, which we condemn and nor did the Party fuel them or respond to them.
We wish to offer immediate clarification that:
- No formal complaint of anti-Semitism against Dr Ali has ever been received but had one been received, it would have been dealt with in line with Party complaint procedures
- The Green Party condemns the way in which the statements provided were used to fuel further stories and negative comment towards Ali during the leadership elections.
