Jonathan Bartley: Green Party launches refugees campaign as Donald Trump is sworn in

19 January 2017

Last Friday, with party leaders and members across the country, I joined Bridges Not Walls, a nationwide day of action which saw banners dropped from iconic bridges across the country. Their messages made it clear that we reject the rise of the far right, and stand in solidarity with marginalised groups against the politics of fear and hate.

Alongside the demonstrations we launched a petition calling on home secretary Amber Rudd to widen the family reunification rules for refugees, so that families are not forced to suffer even more than they already have by being split up.

During these turbulent times, which have seen a resurgence of the far right across Europe as well as in the UK, and the election of Donald Trump in the United States, it is more important than ever that we are unified in opposition to their malicious intentions and malevolent values.

Because we are all citizens of the world and migration is a part of 21st century life. It’s not in anyone's long term interests to keep building up barriers and shutting out refugees who desperately need our help.
