Brighton and Hove Greens expand apprenticeships

17 August 2011

Around 200 residents of Brighton and Hove heard first-hand about exciting new opportunities to get into training and employment through apprenticeships as part of Green-led Brighton & Hove City Council's city-wide drive to tackle inequality.

Male and female residents aged from 17 years old to those in their 30s attended the Mears Apprenticeship Open Day held in the new state of the art Brighton & Hove Housing Centre.

Apprenticeship opportunities were outlined at the event in East Brighton, and involved key partners with the city council: Mears, City College Brighton and Hove, CITB-Construction Skills and the GMB union.

Brighton & Hove City Council Leader Bill Randall said:

"The Green Party is committed to tackling inequality, and through initiatives like this with our city partners, we can showcase life changing opportunities.

"It's fitting that the apprenticeship open day was run by our housing partner Mears at the new housing centre in Moulsecoomb, as this is an area suffering from high unemployment.

"Not only will residents see improved housing repairs services through the new centre, but around 200 apprentices will be taken on over the next 10 years under the partnership with Mears."

On hand on the day were four Mears' apprentices, to discuss their experiences and to set out the opportunities and challenges of being an apprentice, and their Mentors, who gave an insight into the skills and training on offer.
