All Met officers should declare gifts over £25 on public register

17 August 2011

Reacting to IPCC decisions on the MPA referrals, relating to conduct of Sir Paul Stephenson, John Yates, Andy Hayman and Peter Clarke and the Met's response phone hacking, Jenny Jones, Green member of the Metropolitan Police Authority, said:

"The IPCC investigated whether officers' conduct conformed to current rules and standards. The IPCC concluded it did.

"This doesn't mean there weren't mistakes or errors of judgement made.

"The inquiry should look at where the rules need to change, for example:

- All officers of all ranks should declare gifts over £25 on public register.

- Senior officers should turn down freebees, such as the health spa example - they are well paid so that they don't need to accept gifts.

- We need tighter guidance on officers meeting with journalists, including that the meetings should be on public record."
