How the Euro-voting works... in a cartoon

25 May 2009

The Green Party has launched a short cartoon film to explain to voters how the proportional voting system used in UK Euro-elections works.

The film is currently on the party's homepage, www.greenparty.org.uk.

It can also be viewed from www.stopnickgriffin.org.uk.

Tracy Dighton-Brown, the Green Party's head of media, said:

"Feedback from the doorstep suggests that a large proportion of voters don't really know how the D'Hondt system works. So we've made it easy to understand.

"There's a strong move to stop the BNP leader getting elected. But if we're to succeed in that, people need to understand why it's the battle for fourth place that counts. Our new film makes it really obvious.

"In this election, every Green vote will count."

The film was made by Sian Berry, the former Green Party London mayoral candidate, who is currently working on the Stop Nick Griffin campaign.

Sian commented: "I was up against the BNP in last year's London mayor election, but this campaign n the North West is more important than any other cause I've been involved in. Keeping this racist party from making a breakthrough into Europe is something that I know will make a real difference to politics in the UK."

The voiceover was provided by Matt Hanley, who works as campaign manager for Peter Tatchell, the well-known human rights campaigner and Green Party spokesperson.
