Nothing new in government's carbon plan, say Greens

15 July 2009

Responding to today's government announcement of a "low carbon plan," Caroline Lucas MEP said:

"There is nothing really new here. The targets still lag behind the science. There's still the same old preference for nuclear, which isn't green and won't deliver the short-term CO2 reductions we urgently need.

"The same 400,000 green jobs by 2015 were announced months ago. Since then the Green Party's 2009 election manifesto has shown how over a million green jobs could be created within 2-3 years.

"And there's still a refusal to fully fund a universal energy-saving programme for all homes and businesses. Instead it's going to be left to individuals to apply for loans."

Recently the government's own Sustainable Development Commission accused the government of talking-up its eco-policy on the world stage while failing to deliver the requisite policies in its own country. Caroline Lucas concluded, "As the Sustainable Development Commission said recently, Labour has won a few battles but it's still losing the war."
