Anti-nuclear Lib Dems vote for latest nuclear power extension

17 December 2010

Green Party national spokesperson on sustainable development, John Whitelegg has expressed disappointment that Liberal Democrat councilors on Lancaster City Council have backed the building of new nuclear power facilities at Heysham, despite a pre-election promise to oppose any nuclear new build.

John Whitelegg, one of the Green councillors on Lancaster City Council, said:

"I'm very disappointed indeed that Council has opted to support something that is intrinsically dangerous and high risk when there are many alternatives capable of generating large amounts of electricity that are associated with trivial and insignificant risks.

"Nuclear power will not create the jobs or the attractive image that the district needs."

At the Council meeting, John Whitelegg opposed the new facilities, stating nuclear power was expensive, high risk, usually over budget and usually delivered several years late, as well as being associated with serious health risks (including leukaemia).
