Green Party Condemns Section 28

18 September 2013

The Green Party condemned the use of  Section 28 in schools at it's conference this weekend. Section 28 bans the  "promotion of homosexuality", and has been responsible for homophobic bullying going unchallenged and lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) students being neglected. The party called on the Department of Education to support schools update their policy & issue mandatory guidelines for the teaching of sexuality in schools.

Benali Hamdache the proposer of the motion had the following to say:

"It is outrageous that so many schools were found to be using such outdated and homophobic policy. It is a failing of this Coalition Government and the last Labour Government not to have updated policy on teaching sexuality in schools"

"The Green Party has condemned these failures. We call for a mandatory curriculum on teaching sexuality, sex & relationships in schools. With no exemptions for faith schools, academies and free schools. LGBT students deserve better than this"
