Green Leader Steven Agnew calls for transparency over ‘on the run’ issue

1 March 2014

In an address to the Green Party of England & Wales' Spring conference, Green MLA and leader of the Green Party of Northern Ireland, Steven Agnew has called for greater transparency in Northern Ireland.

This comes after revelations that over 180 so called ‘On the Runs’ had received government letters reassuring them that they were not at risk of arrest or prosecution for Troubles-related crime, without the awareness of the Northern Ireland Department of Justice.

Speaking in Liverpool, Agnew said:

“The lack of transparency has caused a further breakdown of trust in what was already a very fragile political situation. The Good Friday Agreement included prisoner releases which was a bitter pill to swallow but something society chose because they believed it was in the interests of the common good.

"People feel excluded and betrayed and we need an open process to restore public confidence.”
