Greens become official opposition on Solihull council

23 May 2014

* Solihull Greens now on 10 seats, pushing Lib Dems into 3rd place

* Nuneaton and Bedworth elects another Green councillor, Ian Bonner in Weddington

As local election results come in, Cllr Will Duckworth, the Green Party's deputy leader, said:

"For the first time, we are an official opposition in the West Midlands, with 10 councillors in Solihull. And that is in an area with a Lib Dem MP."

"It was only in May 2008 that the Solihull Greens elected their first councilor, Mike Sheridan, in Smith's Wood ward against the leader of the council's Labour Group. Two years later in 2010, over 4400 people were voting Green across Solihull in the local elections."

"In 2009, the West Midlands Greens had 3 councillors on 3 councils. After four gains today, we have 23 councillors on 9 councils."

"Across the country's 2nd largest city, Birmingham, we had good results in Bournville, Harborne, Moseley, Nechells and Selly Oak."

"And in Coventry, a city of 300 000 people, we were 4th in local elections results, ahead of the Lib Dems ward by ward by ward."
