Green-led Brighton & Hove City Council's transport achievements recognised by industry

3 October 2014

GREEN-led Brighton & Hove City Council has been short-listed for another three prizes from the transport industry following the city being named City of the Year 2014 last month by the EU's CIVITAS scheme.

The Seven Dials Safer Transport Scheme and the Lewes Road Sustainable Transport Corridor were 'Highly Commended' at the National Transport Awards on Thursday (October 3rd) evening.

The council is in line for Transport Local Authority of the Year award, alongside being nominated for prizes for traffic management and improving bus services.

In the category for road safety and traffic management, the council is shortlisted for the successful Seven Dials scheme, which changed the old chaotic roundabout to an easy to navigate and pedestrian-friendly environment.

The Green-led administration has made it a priority to transform Brighton and Hove into a more sustainable city, and the council were runners up for the CIVITAS transport award in 2013 and 2012.

Bus journeys in the city have risen to 46 million annually, 20mph speed limits have helped to reduced accident rates, the Old Shoreham Road cycle lane has made a dangerous road a more pleasant and safer environment and ambitious plans are now taking place to improve the area around Brighton Station.

Lead councillor for transport Ian Davey said, "I hope we win but in any case this short listing is recognition that we’re not implementing unusual projects peculiar to Brighton & Hove, but projects which transport experts far and wide believe are common sense.

"Our aim is to get the city moving by offering a broad choice of transport modes - and get them all working as effectively as possible."
