Dr Rupert Read: Genetically modified crops are ‘a reckless gamble with our common future’

12 November 2014

THE Green Party has welcomed a high-profile letter (1) to British consumers highlighting potential harm to human health and the environment caused by genetically modified crops.

A coalition of 57 million people have signed the open letter to British consumers which was delivered to Number 10 yesterday by delegation. Signatories included actors Susan Sarandon, Daryl Hannah and Jeremy Irons.

Rupert Read, Green Party MP-candidate for Cambridge, and co-author with Nassim Taleb of "The Precautionary Principle (with Application to the Genetic Modification of Organisms)", said:

“The issue of genetically-engineered crops is all about the corporate control of our food chain. The Science and Technology Committee of the House of Commons, and the UK Government, seem determined to press ahead with increasing the level of such corporate control. In this context, it is heartening to see those who have bitter experience of the GM industry, our American friends, speak out in no uncertain terms that GM is folly, a reckless gamble with our common future. Only those who are comfortable having our food chain controlled by the Monsantos of this world should back any lurch toward GM.”

The Green Party supports a moratorium on the use of GMOs in all agricultural systems including production of human food and animal feed and on importation of GM food or feed.
