Cyclone Pam: A clear sign that action is needed

16 March 2015

The deputy leader of the The Green Party, Shahrar Ali, has called for urgent action on climate change following the devastation caused by Cyclone Pam on the island nation of Vanuatu.

Mr Ali is calling for the UK to play a major part in pushing for urgent, international action on climate change.

Shahrar Ali, deputy leader of The Green Party, said:

"No single weather event can be attributed to climate change, but last week's cyclone in Vanuatu is a clear sign of things to come if we don't get a handle on this looming crisis.

"People from island nations have been demanding real action on climate change for many years, but all too often their calls have been ignored. The costs of climate change go beyond the tragedy of losing friends and relatives in storms like Pam. In Vanuatu we're seeing the real price of inaction of climate change: development has been set back and millions of pounds will be required to rebuild society there.

This devastating storm sends a clear signal to world leaders ahead of crucial climate talks in Paris this December. The UK must be at the forefront of an urgent, international effort to tackle climate change and protectiisland nations like Vanuatu."
