Ofcom ruling: Green Party reaction

16 March 2015

A spokesperson for the Green Party said:

“The decision by Ofcom not to consider the Green Party a ‘major’ party is deeply disappointing. The regulatory body has failed to recognise that the future of British politics does not have to look like the politics of the past.

“People across the UK understand that the political landscape is fracturing and, as demonstrated by the ‘Green surge’, more and more voters are eager to hear about and share Green values and policies.

"In this changing political landscape and with the public suffering more and more from the impacts of the government's austerity drive, we believe the public has the right to hear the views of a growing, alternative political movement.

“At the last nationwide elections in the UK, the Green Party beat the Liberal Democrats in terms of both total vote and MEPs returned (1), and there’s every chance that a grouping of Green MPs will play a crucial role in potential negotiations over who will form the next government.

“The Green Party approaches this election with more candidates confirmed than ever before (2), a record membership and the will to change the face of UK politics. The Green Party is polling at its highest levels ahead of a General Election in a generation  and is fired up to deliver real change for the common good.

“To consider the Green Party, the party with the third largest membership in England and Wales, not to be a ‘major’ party does a disservice to our democracy.”
