Bennett Slams short-sighted cuts to solar subsidies

24 March 2015

The leader of the Green Party, Natalie Bennett, has slammed plans by the Government to cut support for the solar industry.

The cuts, expected at the end of this month, will affect solar farms above 5MW.

Ms Bennett said:

"The Government's failure to match action to their promise of taking climate change seriously is playing out in their most recent policy announcements. Ministers are prematurely cutting subsidies for solar whilst slashing tax for North Sea oil and gas extractors.

This latest announcement on cutting help for solar could see installations falling by 80%. It beggars belief that ministers, especially the Lib Dems in the cabinet, are taking such a drastic step while the solar industry still needs support to compete with fossil fuel corporations.

We need to quickly rebalance our energy mix. That means support for popular solar and making sure that polluters pay their way."
