Key Green figures to speak at Suffolk Festival of Ideas

22 May 2015

Green Party Deputy Leader Shahrar Ali will be speaking at the Inaugural Suffolk Festival of Ideas later this month. At the festival, which aims to address environmental issues and consumerism, Shahrar will look at the scale of the challenge faced by humanity today.

He said:

"Climate change is the biggest issue of our time. Yet politicians fail to match the urgency of their words with action; others have stopped talking about it at all. I'm delighted to be able to address the Suffolk Festival about the long-term structural changes required in economics and society. How can a green path lead to happier lives without costing the earth?"

Rupert Read, Chair of Green House and the Green Party's transport spokesperson, will also speak at the festival. He said:

"Is there ever going to be a point when we have 'enough'? Only if we change our mind-set; otherwise, there'll always be a hunger for 'more', the kind of hunger that advertisers endlessly feed. Green thinking is about questioning the paradigm of endless 'growth', and this Festival of Ideas looks a perfect setting for such common-sensical and yet profoundly novel thinking."

The Suffolk Festival of Ideas will take place from the 22nd-24th May, and will feature a range of writers, theorists and organisations.
