Scrap buy-to-let subsidies to stop young people being exiled from communities, Green Party says

2 July 2015

Green Party housing spokesperson Tom Chance has dismissed the government’s approach to housing, saying British renters have been left with “some of the weakest protections in Europe”.

His comments come ahead of a speech from Communities Secretary Greg Clark today, in which he is expected to say young people are being “exiled” from their local communities due to a lack of affordable housing.

Chance said:

“Young people have been let down by successive governments who have priced them out of ownership and left them renting with some of the weakest protections in Europe.

“We need rent controls and security of tenure to give young people a chance, and an end to the generous subsidies for buy-to-let landlords, with that money redirected towards providing more social housing.

“Vague talk of building homes doesn't cut it.”
