Cameron can follow Obama’s lead on Climate Change ahead of Paris conference

4 August 2015

CARBON reduction plans, similar to those revealed by the White House yesterday evening (03 August), should be made by the UK government says the Green Party.

President Barack Obama’s administration believes its Clean Power Plan is ambitious and allows the United States to begin negotiations in Paris from a strong position.

Natalie Bennett, Leader of the Green Party says that the outgoing president “deserves credit” for the plans and that Prime Minister David Cameron should follow the American proposals to reward “faster renewable energy deployment”.

Bennett said:

“President Obama’s plans have shown that action, not just words, on climate change from world leaders is possible -as well as necessary- in advance of the UN conference in Paris later this year.

“He deserves credit for doing this while up against the powerful financial interests and allies of the fossil fuel industry.

“Here in the UK, even the government’s own advisors say we won’t meet our unsatisfactory climate change targets and embarrassingly, we rank near the bottom of the European renewables league table.

“It’s clear that national and global solutions to halt climate change must go hand in hand. If David Cameron is serious about the Paris climate conference, he should follow Obama’s example of rewarding renewable energy projects, do more to support energy efficiency and ditch his current reckless approach of demolishing key clean energy policies.”
