Ringfencing road investment “fails to address most urgent transport needs”, says Green Party

20 August 2015

Green Party transport spokesperson Cllr Caroline Russell has backed warnings from transport campaign groups that “massive” cuts to transport as part of the autumn spending review would disproportionately affect local roads, buses and cycling.

Russell said:

“Maintaining the ring-fence on the major investment programme for roads and allowing the brunt of the massive transport cuts to be borne by local transport fails to address our most urgent transport needs.

“Everyday local journeys to access work or education rely on local road maintenance, decent bus services and safe, well-connected routes for walking and cycling.

“Protecting and investing in these should be a priority not least to support the regions to reduce unemployment, support their local economies and end our reliance on cars by making public transport an attractive alternative.”
