100 days to Paris climate negotiations: government policy must make climate sense, say Greens

22 August 2015

With just 100 days to go until world leaders meet in Paris for the latest round of climate negotiations, Green Party deputy leader Amelia Womack has announced the party’s plans to put pressure on the UK government.

As part of its Climate Sense campaign, the party will be urging the government to invest in improving public transport, increasing the UK’s renewable energy output and persuading it to divest public funds from fossil fuel companies.

Womack said:

“This year’s climate negotiations represent an exciting opportunity for actions to be taken that will not only protect the planet, but create the fairer economy and healthier society we need through investment that creates jobs and cuts pollution.

“Over the next 100 days, the Green Party will be pushing our government to pursue policies that make climate sense. We’ll be fighting against its plans for airport expansion, fracking and attacks on solar and wind power, and calling on it to invest in public transport, boost renewable energy and divest from dirty fossil fuels.

“With the impacts of climate change already being felt around the world, the coming months and years are crucial. If we want our children and grandchildren to live in a world where they can breathe clean air as they walk to school or be inspired by seeing whales and dolphins off our coasts, we must take action now.

“Our government’s policies put this future at risk. In Paris they can begin to save it.”

To mark the launch of the campaign, the Green Party today released a Climate Moment picture generator, inviting members of the public to share the moment they fell in love with the Earth on social media.
