* Bennett: Austerity is an 'ideologically-driven, failed political experiment’

Green Party Leader Natalie Bennett will speak at a People’s Assembly rally in Sheffield tonight in advance of the large anti-austerity demonstration at the Conservative Party Conference on 4 October.

At tonight’s event, Bennett is expected to say that we need a "peaceful political revolution" to end the "ideologically-driven, failed experiment of austerity". Bennett will speak alongside Sam Fairbairn, National Secretary, People’s Assembly, and Jolyon Rubinstein, BAFTA-winning filmmaker/writer/perfomer (The Revolution Will be Televised).

Bennett, who, alongside Green Party activists and members, has been at the forefront of the anti-austerity movement, will say that “together we can and will deliver change. The cumulative effect of all our marches, demonstrations, and protests sends a powerful message to Westminster - that an alternative future is possible and that there is mass support ready to deliver it.”

During her Leader’s Speech (2) at last weekend’s Green Party Autumn Conference, Bennett argued that the "failed politics" of austerity "has to end".

Speaking at the Bournemouth International Centre, Bennett said:

"Historians will look back and see 2015 as the year change started - the year that a fundamental shift in politics saw it move away from the mantra of 'greed is good, the environment doesn’t matter' that rose with Margaret Thatcher and will fall with David Cameron.

"It's time for a new approach - the Green approach - a society that works for the common good within the environmental limits of our one fragile planet, a society that works for its people, not for the few global corporations and the richest 1%."
