Green Party ready for 2016 Welsh Assembly election success

1 October 2015

The Green Party will win its first Welsh Assembly seat at next year’s election according to the party’s leader, Natalie Bennett.

Natalie will tell an anti-austerity meeting in Aberystwyth on Saturday (3 October) that if the Green Party wins a result similar to this year’s general election; then the additional members system could return a Green AM to the Senedd.

As well as outline the party’s commitment to a fairer voting system at Westminster, the party’s leader will also explain why the Cardiff assembly needs a strong voice to oppose austerity.

Green Party leader, Natalie Bennett said:

“The Welsh Assembly needs a strong voice offering a positive vision for Wales and the time is right for Welsh Greens to put forward alternatives to public service privatisation in the Senedd.

“Our message to the voters at the General Election, that we can build an economy that gives everyone their fair share, helped us win one million votes and if we can achieve a stunning result like that again, we’ll do very well in Wales.

“The General Election in 2015 reminded us just how outdated the Westminster voting system is. It’s not right that a party that wins one million votes should only return one MP. But 2016 offers us an opportunity to test ourselves in fairer, proportional representation elections in Wales, Scotland and London and it’ll highlight to voters the urgent need for electoral reform.”

A Green team at the assembly will fight for proposals on housing, energy, climate change and stopping the renewal of weapons of mass destruction.

Natalie said:

“Green AMs will work tirelessly for a Wales powered by renewable energy, rather than dirty fossil fuels or dangerous, expensive nuclear power. Our party is united behind a policy of saying no to costly trident renewal and we’ll campaign hard for this money to be spent on making our NHS and education system the best it can be.

“We know that carbon positive housebuilding is already possible. Homes built from local materials that are affordable and reduce the cost of fuel bills can be part of a radical housing strategy so long as voices in the assembly propose it. Only the Green Party will keep the Welsh Government to its word on environmental policies.”
