Green Party celebrates historic moment for peace in Colombia

6 October 2015

THE announcement of a peace treaty between the guerilla group FARC and the Colombia government has been hailed by the Green Party as a historic moment, which will, hopefully, end decades of violent conflict in the country.

Green Party International Speaker and former Labour MP, Tony Clarke welcomed the peace agreement.

“This welcome progress towards peace by all parties in Columbia is a timely reminder to all of us that peace isn’t simply about silencing the guns, it’s about the hard graft of relationship building and reconciliation, it often comes at price that some will find uncomfortable and will want to reject, but it can only come if there is a willingness to begin the process and international support for its achievements. I wholeheartedly congratulate President Santos, Raul Castro and Timeochenko Jimenez on publicly supporting the voices of hope over those of hatred”

Dr Derek Wall, Green Party International Coordinator added:

“Recent decades have seen severe conflict in Colombia. It is inspiring that both the FARC and the Colombia government have managed to negotiate and reach an agreement. Long standing inequality, violence and simmering resentments have made this process difficult but we welcome this step. If peace is possible in Colombia this will inspire renewed efforts to end conflict in other parts of the planet. The Green Party strongly supports efforts to end war, injustice and conflict.”
