Green Party condemns Love Activists’ prison sentences

12 October 2015

Green Party leader Natalie Bennett has hit out at the “disproportionate” prison sentences handed to five political activists in Liverpool last month after they occupied the old Bank of England building in the city.

The Love Activists used the long-empty building to feed and shelter homeless people, and were sentenced to 10 weeks in custody last month.

Bennett said:

“These disproportionate prison sentences are a waste of public resources, which could be better spent on addressing the problem that the Love Activists have worked to draw attention to.

“In the sixth-wealthiest country in the world, no one should fear being forced to sleep on the street.

“I am proud that the Green Party passed policy at our conference last weekend to make housing a human right, and would like to see these sentences overturned, and the money being wasted on imprisoning the activists instead being spent on improving provision for homeless people.”
