Natalie Bennett: More 'must be done to encourage women to consider a career in politics'

19 October 2015

NATALIE Bennett, Green Party Leader, today (19 October) joined over 400 women at the special 60th anniversary Women of the Year lunch and awards ceremony in London.

Bennett, who has overseen the remarkable ‘Green surge’ in membership and led the Green Party to its best ever General Election in May 2015, joined otherexceptional women, all of whom who have achieved something of significance this year and provided inspiration to others.

Bennett, who attended as one of the 2015 women of achievement, said:

“I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with so many truly inspiring and exceptional women.

"Earlier this year, it was encouraging to have gender balance on some of the televised Leaders' Debates - an all-too rare thing in British politics.

"But more still must be done to encourage more women to consider a career in politics. At a time when the Conservative government's destructive austerity programme is hitting women the hardest it is especially important for women's voices to be represented and heard.”

Recent Women of the Year winners include Doreen Lawrence, campaigner for justice following the murder of her son Stephen in 1993, Fahma Mohammed,anti-FGM activist, and Diana Nammi, Founder of the Iranian and Kurdish Women’s Rights Organisation.

This year’s event took place at the InterContinental London Park Lane Hotel.
