Natalie Bennett: COP21 represents a real opportunity to tackle climate change, ‘the biggest challenge of our time’

30 November 2015

ON the opening day of the crucial UN climate conference in Paris, Natalie Bennett, Green Party Leader, said:

“Paris is a huge opportunity for world leaders to show real vision to deliver a safer climate. Tackling climate change is the biggest challenge of our time and it is heartening to know that leaders from 147 nations and negotiators from 195 countries are all gathered in the French capital.

Those gathered in Paris have a unique opportunity to shape a better future for us all. It is still possible for us to avoid the worst effects of climate change – but only if urgent action is taken."

Leading Green Party of England and Wales (GPEW) politicians joined members and activists at yesterday’s inspirational climate marches across Europe. GPEW support all of the European Greens’ key demands from Paris (1). The final Paris agreement must be legally binding, and must set a long term goal of phasing out global carbon emissions by 2050 to maintain global warming well below 2°C. Human rights must be at the core of climate action and there must be full respect for the rights of local communities and indigenous peoples - particularly those vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change.

Natalie will be in Paris 11-13 December 2015.
