Green Party calls for immediate action to tackle UK’s pollution deaths

*Russell: “The writing is on the wall for our car dependent transport system”

The extent of the UK’s high death toll caused by pollution revealed today (23 February) must be the catalyst for government investment in alternatives to car use according to the Green Party.

A report by the Royal College of Physicians states that “around 40,000 deaths are attributable to exposure to outdoor air pollution” and that this contributes to “many of the major health challenges of our day”. [1]

Green Party Transport spokesperson, Caroline Russell said:

"The writing is on the wall for our car dependent transport system. How much more evidence do we need that pollution from diesel is killing us and costing the country billions in health and other costs.

“The government must act now. We have to invest in alternatives to car use and ownership so that people have access to affordable and convenient transport options enabling them to avoid being exposed to air pollution and causing it. "
